L.A. Lover (Matilija) marks a moment of beauty in spring when the Matilija poppy blooms in southern California. For some reason, in the 10 years I have lived here, I have not taken notice of the tall and bushy variety of the poppy. This year though, my husband Tim and I were walking along the bike and pedestrian path of the L.A. River and ventured off to visit the store called Suay. As soon as we turned off the path, we encountered a massive Matilija poppy plant taller than me.(I am 5'7") Seeing the bright yellow center and delicate white petals, I knew right away I would commemorate the native flowering plant.
