L.A. Lover (Beast Hole) was the first in the L.A. Lover series. I had just finished grad school and moved into a warehouse space in the Arts District. It was thrilling to live where the 101, 5 and 10 freeways met and separated out like concrete tributaries above the L.A. River that was a few feet from my studio. I made a rubbing of a nearby manhole cover featuring the identifiable City of Los Angeles embossing and started adding colored pencil and charcoal with additional geometric rubbings from other street covers. The "Beast" came to being as I imagined the fantasy of a benevolent monster that lives under the streets but whose lair also leads to the L.A. river concrete spillway and very rarely is seen by humans.
