I started the Companion series after studying Robert Ryman's monochrome paintings in which he used white pigment and brushstrokes to create paintings that are visceral and in which the subject is paint. In this series there is a line, square or material from the underlying substrate that shows through to give the viewer another visual clue into gaining access to the painting. Metaphorically, Companion VII is also based on the companionship, however disconnected, between maps of trails and the reality of traversing a trail that has become overgrown and hidden which creates panic and anxiety until the trail is found again.
